Sizing & Fit

Pre-draped Saree Size Guide

Matching pre-drapes require six measurements. This guide walks through each one, with diagrams and tips, so your saree arrives ready to wear straight from the box.

Every Danyah Banaras pre-draped saree is matching to your measurements. We do not sell off-the-rack pre-drapes because the entire benefit of the format — instant wear, perfect silhouette, no pinning — depends on precise fit. This pre-draped saree size guide walks you through the six measurements we need, how to take them accurately, what each one controls in your finished saree, and the built-in adjustability that accommodates normal weight fluctuation across a wedding season.

Why we custom-size every pre-drape

A traditional six-yard saree is forgiving — the wearer adjusts the drape, the pleats, and the pallu to fit her body and the occasion. A pre-draped saree has those choices already made. If the pleats are stitched for a 28-inch waist and you have a 32-inch waist, the saree will not fit, full stop. So we measure each saree to each wearer.

The six measurements we take determine: the petticoat fit (waist, hip), the saree length (height), the pallu length (height + style preference), the blouse fit (bust, blouse length, arm length). All six matter; the saree will be perfect only if all six are accurate.

Where reasonable, we also build in adjustability — the petticoat has three sets of internal waist hooks giving ±2 inches of flex, and the lower pallu attachment has three height positions. But the core stitched dimensions are fixed at the time of construction and cannot be altered later without re-stitching.

The six measurements you need

Use a soft tailoring tape measure (not a hardware tape). Ask a friend or partner to help — self-measurement is less accurate. Measure over light underclothing, not over jeans or layers. Stand naturally, do not pull in the waist or chest.

1. Height (full body)

Stand against a wall in flat feet (no shoes, no heels). Measure from the floor to the top of your head. This determines saree length (from waist to ankle) and pallu length.

2. Waist circumference

Measure at your natural waist — the narrowest point between your ribs and your hips, typically 1-2 inches above the navel. Keep the tape level all the way around. Do not pull tight; the tape should sit comfortably without pressing into the skin. This determines petticoat waist fit.

3. Hip circumference

Measure at the fullest point of the hips — usually 7-9 inches below the natural waist. Keep the tape level and parallel to the floor. This determines petticoat hip fit and the box-pleat width.

4. Bust circumference

Wearing the bra you plan to wear under the saree, measure at the fullest point of the bust. Keep the tape level. This determines blouse fit.

5. Blouse length

Measure from the top of your shoulder (where it meets your neck) down to the desired blouse hem. Standard blouse hem is at the waist; longer (mid-back) and shorter (cropped) options are available. This determines the cut length of the blouse.

6. Arm length (shoulder to elbow OR shoulder to wrist)

For 3/4-sleeve blouses (classic), measure from the shoulder seam to 2 inches below the elbow. For sleeveless blouses (couture), this measurement is not needed. For full-sleeve blouses (modest / winter), measure from the shoulder to the wrist bone.

All sizes are stitched with ±2 inches of internal waist adjustability. For petite (under 150cm) and tall (over 180cm) wearers, custom sizing is the only option — please provide your measurements at checkout.

Blouse fit — what to expect

Every pre-drape ships with a matching blouse, included with every saree. The cut depends on the style you select at checkout.

Classic (3/4 sleeve, round neck)

The default. Round neckline with a 3-inch back depth, 3/4 sleeves ending 2 inches below the elbow, princess seam through the bust for shape, and a hem ending at the natural waist. Available in standard sizes XS-XXL or custom.

Couture (sleeveless, deep V)

Modern bridal cut. Deep V neckline (5-7 inches front depth), sleeveless with bound armholes, deeper V at the back (6-8 inches), princess seam, hem at natural waist. We recommend this cut with a tailored bra or a built-in cup if you prefer not to wear an additional bra.

Contemporary (cap sleeve, boat neck)

Editorial / fashion-forward cut. Wide boat neck running from shoulder point to shoulder point, cap sleeves (1.5 inches long), princess seam, hem at natural waist.

Bespoke (custom design)

For sweetheart necklines, off-shoulder cuts, embellished blouses, contrast colours, peplum hems, or any other custom design — contact our concierge team. Bespoke blouse design adds 1-3 weeks to lead time and a modest design fee. Many of our brides commission bespoke blouses for the main wedding day and use included classic blouses for sangeet, mehendi, and reception sarees.

Built-in adjustability

Bodies fluctuate. Wedding season schedules are unforgiving. Our pre-drapes are constructed with five points of built-in adjustability to accommodate normal change.

1. Three sets of waist hooks (±2 inches)

Internal hooks at the petticoat waistband allow you to take the waist in or let it out by up to 2 inches in either direction. This covers normal seasonal weight fluctuation, post-meal expansion at long wedding events, and minor measurement variability.

2. Three pallu length positions

The lower attachment point of the pallu has three snap positions giving short (knee), medium (mid-calf), and long (lower calf / ankle) pallu length. You can adjust the pallu length yourself in 30 seconds.

3. Removable internal liner

The cotton liner inside the petticoat is removable via a discreet zip. This makes the assembly more breathable in summer (remove the liner) and warmer in winter (keep the liner). The liner is washable separately from the saree.

4. Side zip with concealed access

The side zip is positioned on the left hip with concealed access through a fabric overlay, so the zip remains invisible from the front and back. The zip pull is internal — you do not see it from the outside.

5. Pallu drape angle

The pallu can be worn with the brocade either fully facing forward (the classic Banarasi presentation, showcasing the pallu pattern) or with the brocade angled diagonally (a more modern presentation that shows the pallu pattern when the wearer turns). The shoulder hook supports both positions.

If your weight has changed by more than 2 inches at the waist or hip from your original measurements, we offer a remeasurement and re-stitch service — typically 2 weeks turnaround and a modest service fee. Get in touch with our concierge team.

FAQ

Sizing — Frequently Asked Questions

What if my measurements change between order and delivery?

Normal weight fluctuation of up to ±2 inches at the waist or hip is handled by the built-in adjustable internal hooks — you can take in or let out the petticoat without any tailor visit. For changes beyond 2 inches, contact our concierge team within 60 days of delivery. We offer a remeasurement and re-stitch service (typically 2 weeks turnaround) for a modest fee. For brides specifically, we recommend measuring 6 weeks before the wedding and avoiding aggressive dieting in the final 4 weeks, since most brides' bodies fluctuate during the wedding planning period.

Can I measure myself, or do I need a tailor?

You can self-measure with a partner's help — most clients do. A professional tailor's measurement is more accurate but typically not necessary for pre-drape sizing because our construction has 2 inches of internal adjustability built in. The key is to use a soft tailoring tape (not a metal hardware tape), measure over light underclothing (not over thick layers), and have someone else read the tape rather than trying to look down at your own waist. For brides commissioning bespoke high-investment Banarasis, we recommend a professional measurement or an in-person consultation at our Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore, or Hyderabad ateliers.

Does the petticoat add bulk under the saree?

No — the petticoat is cut from a soft cotton-lining or silk-blend lining specifically chosen to lie flat under the saree's box pleats. The pleats themselves are stitched flat (rather than bunched and tucked, as in a traditional drape), so the silhouette is actually cleaner than a traditional drape. Most clients report that the pre-draped saree looks slimmer through the waist and hips than a traditional drape, because the pre-drape construction eliminates the bulk of hand-tucked pleats.

What if I am between two standard sizes?

Always size up and rely on the internal adjustable hooks to take the waist in. The hooks give you 2 inches of contraction — well more than enough to handle the gap between standard sizes. Sizing down and trying to let out the petticoat after the fact is much harder, because the construction allows only modest expansion. When in doubt, always size up.

Can the blouse be re-tailored after delivery?

Yes — every Danyah Banaras blouse is constructed with seam allowance specifically to allow minor re-tailoring after delivery. Any competent local tailor can take in the bust or waist by up to 1 inch, adjust the sleeve length, or alter the neck depth by up to 1 inch. For more significant alterations, send the blouse back to our atelier for re-stitching (turnaround approximately 2 weeks). The saree itself (the pleats and pallu) is harder to alter after stitching, which is why we measure carefully at the front end.

What is your size policy for petite (under 150 cm) and tall (over 180 cm) wearers?

For petite and tall wearers, our standard size chart does not apply — we cut the saree completely custom to your measurements. There is no additional charge for petite or tall sizing; we simply ask for your exact measurements at checkout and our cutting team adjusts the petticoat length, saree length, pallu length, and blouse proportions accordingly. We have draped wearers as short as 142 cm and as tall as 187 cm — the pre-drape engineering works at any size.
